Knowledge

al-ʿilm

العِلْم

In logic, knowledge (ʿilm) is the mind's grasp of something, and it is either conception alone or conception together with a judgement.

Explanation

The first kind is conception (taṣawwur); the second, conception with a judgement, is assent (taṣdīq). The whole of logic follows this division.

Each kind is either immediate (ḍarūrī) or reached by reflection (naẓarī), and logic is about how to reach the second from the first.

Also written as: ilm, 'ilm, knowledge in logic.
